Remote Working
The federal government has chosen not to follow several Asian nations in implementing work-from-home mandates in response to fuel supply concerns. A federal minister emphasised that decisions around remote work remain a matter for individual workers and employers, rather than a government directive. This comes after the International Energy Agency recently encouraged Australians to work from home where possible to help reduce oil consumption amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
While working from home is not currently being implemented to reduce the fuel crisis yet it is becoming more likely that a “covid like” initiative is on the horizon.
So, the question is, Is your Business remote worker ready? Here’s some points to consider:
Technology & Equipment
Provide company devices (laptops, phones, peripherals) and ergonomic equipment to support health and productivity. Ensure reliable internet access, secure connections (VPN), and consider virtual desktops for consistent work environments.
Cybersecurity & Compliance
Enforce two-factor authentication, install endpoint security, and provide regular staff training on cyber risks. Establish a clear work-from-home policy covering acceptable use and data security.
Communication & Management
Use collaboration tools for messaging, meetings, and file sharing. Maintain regular check-ins, set clear expectations, and focus on outcomes rather than hours worked.
Culture & Wellbeing
Encourage virtual team interaction, promote healthy work boundaries, and provide access to mental health support.
Legal & Safety
Ensure home workspaces meet WHS requirements and implement strong data protection practices to maintain compliance.
